Holidaymakers booked with TUI at several hotels on Corfu have been told not to travel after wildfires triggered evacuation orders on the island.

Greece’s Emergency Communications Service issued evacuation orders for at least 18 parts of Corfu on Sunday, amid concerns temperatures are expected to rise again this week.

People in the areas of Santa, Megoula, Porta, Palia, Perithia and Sinies on the island were told to leave on Sunday evening.

Responding to queries on Twitter, TUI said: “If you are travelling to Corfu on 24/25th July and are staying at the TUI Blue Atlantica Nissaki Beach, Pantokrator, Golden Mare, La Riviera or Nautilusue then we advise not to travel to the airport. Other hotels are operating as normal.”

However, by this morning, the situation on Corfu had improved, with Foreign Office Minister Andrew Mitchell saying that, as of around 7.40am, there were ‘no evacuations from Corfu’.

Deputy Mayor for Tourism on North Corfu told Radio 4’s Today programme that, despite a ‘very bad night’, the situation has improved and authorities expect people will be able to return to their homes and fires extinguished by this evening.

“The fires spread very rapidly. Things are much better this morning,” he said.

He said police believe the fires were caused by arsonists, who he described as ‘maniacs’.

And Greece’s Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni, said the situation on Corfu is ‘not alarming’.

In a statement, TUI said: “We’ve been working with the local authorities in Corfu following the outbreak of a wildfire in the north east of the island last night resulting in guests being evacuated from a small number of hotels.

“As a precautionary measure we also stopped new arrivals into the affected hotels for Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th July.

“The situation is now fully under control and guests are returning to their hotels to continue their holidays as planned.”

Meanwhile, on the island of Evia, authorities residents in four southern villages were told to evacuate to the town of Karystos, because of wildfires.
