Orkney is looking to limit the number of daily cruise ship visits due to concerns from residents.

The council is considering a booking policy to restrict the number of large ships calling on the Scottish island on the same day, according to The Times.

The measure is due to be discussed by councillors at a meeting on 22 August.

More than 230 ships call at Orkney every year and passengers flock to Neolithic sites like Skara Brae, boosting the local economy by £15 millon a year.

But locals say the influx of visitors has forced road closures at busy times for safety reasons.

Orkney is the latest European destination to announce plans to limit cruise passengers, following Venice, which has banned large ship from its lagoon. Barcelona is considering raising taxes for cruise passengers and Amsterdam is proposing to close its city centre port to cruise ships.
