US cruise-and-stay packages

So many cruises depart from amazing cities in the US that it’s a no-brainer to tag on a few days exploring before or after a sailing.

Why wouldn’t clients want to spend some time in New York after seeing the Manhattan skyline and skimming past the Statue of Liberty as they sail into the Big Apple at the end of a Caribbean cruise? And wouldn’t it be a shame to fly all the way to Seattle to pick up a cruise to Alaska without spending some time in the city that gave the world coffee culture with the birth of Starbucks, not to mention numerous TV shows and movies including Frasier, Sleepless in Seattle and Grey’s Anatomy?

Miami and the Art Deco delights of Miami Beach are an easy add-on for clients taking a cruise from the city, which was once the world’s busiest cruise terminal. Fort Lauderdale, which is now the busiest cruise port and known as ‘Venice of America’, is also close to the Kennedy Space Center and an easy drive to Orlando’s theme parks.

Meanwhile, San Francisco, home to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, has plenty to tempt clients taking a cruise to extend their holiday with a few days in the city.

In reality, you can combine any city in the US with a cruise, or even combine a cruise with a land-based tour. Here are some ideas to give you some inspiration:

  • Virgin Voyages suggests combining one of its Caribbean cruises on Scarlet Lady or Valiant Lady with three nights in Miami
  • Titan Travel combines a seven-night Mississippi river cruise on the American Queen steamer with city stays in Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans.
  • Norwegian Cruise Lines includes a six-day pre-cruise tour of Fairbanks, Denali and Anchorage in Alaska with a seven-day Alaska cruise, which includes a river boat and rail tour and soft-adventure options such as dog-sledding, whitewater rafting, sightseeing by helicopter and hiking.
  • MSC Cruises recommends three nights in New York City before its cruises to the Caribbean.
  • Ocean Florida combines eight nights in Universal in Orlando with six nights on Carnival Vista sailing the Caribbean.
  • Viva Cruises combines three nights in Las Vegas, two in Los Angeles and two in San Francisco with a Carnival seven-night Mexican Riviera Cruise.
  • Titan has packaged a Panama Canal cruise with a tour of California’s Big Sur and a San Francisco tour.
  • Kuoni suggests spending three nights in Seattle before boarding Celebrity Edge’s Inside Passage cruise.
