Venice day-trip tax could double to €10

Officials in Venice are considering doubling the tourist tax for day visitors that was introduced this year, after deeming the trial a success.

The trial ran on 29 days from 25 April to 14 July for day visitors to the Old City but not the islands. In total, 485,062 bought a ticket costing €5 per person and the tax raised €2.4 million (£2m) – triple the original target of €700,000.

City officials are looking at extending the tax next year and doubling it, at least on certain days, but said a final decision will be made in the autumn.

While some say the tax has been a success, others say the huge amount of money it has generated prove it failed in its original intention to keep tourist numbers down.

Before the trial started, former City Mayor Massimo Cacciari told visitors not to pay the tax, while Simone Venturini, the Councillor in charge of tourism, said the tax was specifically introduced to ‘discourage day-trippers’.

Despite the fact officials had warned people who didn’t pay would be fined between €50 and €300, no fines were issued.
