Iceland’s Blue Lagoon shut just a day after reopening following a volcanic eruption close to the famous spa.
The eruption in Sundhnúkagígar on the Rekjanes peninsula began at around 9pm on Monday.
Reykjavik’s international airport remains open and while there were severe delays late yesterday and early his morning, services are now operating normally.
The Blue Lagoon said it had temporarily closed its facilities and all guests with confirmed bookings will be contacted.
The latest volcanic eruption is in an area between Sýlingarfell and Hagafell, just north of the town of Grindavík and east of the Blue Lagoon and neighbouring Svartsengi Power Plant.
The fissure is estimated to be over three kilometres long along Sundhnúkagígar crater row.
The start of the eruption was captured on the live webcam of the national broadcaster RÚV:
The Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management has declared an Emergency/Distress Phase in response to the start of the eruption.
