More than 100 passengers and nine crew on Viking Cruises ship Viking Neptune came down with a stomach bug during a sailing that ended on Tuesday.

The US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed 110 of the ship’s passengers experienced gastrointestinal symptoms, such as abdominal cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea.

The sickness outbreak took place as the 930-passenger ship sailed from Reykjavik, Iceland, to New Jersey, US, Cruise Hive reports.

Among the 455 crew members, nine reported similar symptoms.

In response to the outbreak, Viking Cruises has increased cleaning and disinfection procedures and is collecting specimens from gastrointestinal illnesses cases to send to the CDC lab for pathogenic identification.

The line is also providing daily updates to CDC’s Environmental Health Officers.

The Environmental Health Officers boarded the ship while it was docked in New Jersey to carry out a environmental health assessment.

Viking Neptune is currently sailing a 12-day cruise from New Jersey to Montreal, Canada.

Travel Gossip has contacted Viking Cruises about the sickness outbreak.
