More than 20 domestic and international flights have been grounded at Mexico City International Airport due to a volcanic eruption.

The airport said airlines were carrying out safety checks after planes flew through ash from the Popocatépetl while travelling towards the Mexican capital.

The Foreign Office urged passengers to check their flight status with their airlines.

In a post on X (previously Twitter), the airport said it remains open and in operation.

“Specialised teams and management remain on alert and are evaluating the ash conditions,” the airport said. “At this time, the volcanic ash cloud is heading toward the Gulf of Mexico.”

Ash fall has been reported in Mexico City and the surrounding area, about 45 miles south-east of the volcano.
