British visitors to Oman are being urged to ‘remain vigilant’ after four people were killed and 30 were wounded by gunfire at a mosque in the capital, Muscat.

In an update to its travel advice, the Foreign Office said: “We are aware of a shooting incident late on 15 July in the vicinity of a mosque in the Wadi Kabir area of Muscat.

“Remain vigilant, monitor local media for developments, and follow the instructions of the authorities.”

Those killed in what the media is describing as a ‘rare breach of security’ in the Middle Eastern country were Pakistani nationals.

The attack took place in the Ali bin Abi Talib mosque, a Shi’ite mosque in Sunni-dominated Oman, known locally as the Imam Ali mosque.

The Pakistan Foreign Ministry described the incident as a terrorist attack.
