Passengers have been warned to check hand luggage rules for all airports on their itinerary as London City became the first mainstream UK gateway to ease restrictions on liquids today.
Sophisticated new scanners installed at the Docklands airport mean that passengers can leave liquids in containers as large as two litres in their hand luggage when going through security.
They also don’t need to remove electronic devices, such as laptops, from their bags.
Regional hub Teesside International Airport relaxed the 100ml rule last month and the UK Government has set a deadline of June 2024 for other airports to follow suit.
However, passengers are being warned that they might not be allowed to carry liquids in containers of more than 100ml onto a plane when they return from an overseas trip.
Nicky Kelvin, Senior Director at travel advice website The Points Guy told The Guardian: “Anybody traveling with hand baggage will need to check what the current trial or rule is for the place they are travelling from and to.
“If you are a transit passenger you will need to be even more careful. Of course, you can still check a bag in if you need to, but it’s expensive.”
