Heavy rain and hurricane-force winds are expected for Mexico’s Pacific coast after Tropical Storm Lidia strengthened into a hurricane overnight.
Hurricane Lidia – which is currently a few hundred miles west-southwest of the beach resort of Puerto Vallarta – is expected to make landfall later today.
According to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC), Hurricane Lidia could produce flash flooding and possible mud slides in the states of Nayarit, Sinaloa and parts of Jalisco. Warnings were also in place for Puerto Vallarta and the surrounding coast, according to the Vallarta Daily website.
The NHC added that swells from Lidia will affect the west coast of Mexico and the Baja California peninsula over the next couple of days.
The UK Foreign Office also issued a travel warning stating that tropical storm conditions are possible along the south and west central coast of Mexico. It added: “A hurricane warning has been announced for the Islas Marias, and the coast of west-central Mexico. There are also tropical storm warnings in place.”
