Which? claims car hire prices in some popular summer sun destinations have more than doubled since pre-pandemic.
The prices rises are greatest in Italy, where a week’s rental in August has risen from an average of £209 to £473, up 126%.
In Cyprus, prices are up 100% over 2019, and in the UK they’re up 106%, said Which?
The consumer champ looked at figures for more than 8,000 rentals in nine popular destinations and found that the most expensive was the US, where prices are up 92% since 2019 to hit an average of £546.
Its survey of 2,700 members found that Auto Reisen and Cicar both received ‘exceptional’ customer scores of 91% and were awarded five stars across several categories including extra charges and customer service.
Sister companies Alamo and Enterprise both scored 72% and Hertz 71%.
Alamo was almost £100 a week cheaper on average than Enterprise.
Which? said Goldcar remains at the bottom of its table with a ‘dismal’ customer score of 54%.
Even though it has some of the lowest prices, the car hire firm scored just two stars for value for money.
It also received two stars for the ease of opting out of optional extras, and for customer service.
Zest Car Rental was the only broker to receive the Which? Recommended Provider badge, after achieving a score of 87%.
Auto Europe was also rated highly, with a customer score of 82%.
At the bottom of the survey was DoYouSpain.com, with a score of just 55%.
