Rescue teams on Majorca have found the body of one of two British hikers who went missing yesterday during a storm.
The 32-year-old man was found near the Torrent de Pareis river in the Tramuntana mountains on the north-west side of the island. A search for a second Briton, believed to be a woman, is ongoing.
Local media reports the pair was among a group of five that set out on a hike on Tuesday afternoon. The other three managed to get to a mountain hut just after midnight on Wednesday morning.
The Civil Guard said it has rescued 10 hikers, including German, English and French tourists, from several different groups who were trapped in or near the Torrent de Pareis.
Some of the tourists told the rescuers the missing British hikers had been swept away.
The island was hit by heavy rains on Tuesday, leaving behind between 70 and 100 litres of water per square meter in Serra de Tramuntana area, according to the Balearic Islands’ newspaper Ultima Hora.
The storms are expected to worsen today and the whole island is under an amber warning until 6pm, with forecasts of hurricane-force gusts of 120km per hour, accompanying thunderstorms and potential flash flooding.
After that, a yellow warning will continue until midnight for the Tramuntana, north and northeast regions of the island. There are no current alerts for Thursday, although there is still a risk of rain. Temperatures are expected to rise at the weekend, but more rain is likely on Sunday and Monday.
Airport authority Aena said there are delays at airports in Palma, Ibiza and Menorca today because of storms, the Majorcan Daily Bulletin reports.
