Becoming a travel agent isn’t something that can be achieved overnight – like any career it takes commitment as well as continuous training to help you provide your customers with the perfect holidays.

If you are looking into homeworking, there’s a lot to understand when it comes to selecting the right franchise model for you – whether you are new to the industry, taking your first step towards running your own business as a homeworker, or looking to switch to a new franchise.

There are many factors to consider; some companies will only offer virtual training rather than in-person sessions, and others will offer just a few days for an induction instead of several weeks of settling in.

Many people want to know the support is there from day one to help navigate the ever-changing travel landscape – so choosing the right travel franchise to suit, really is crucial.

Travel Counsellors sets itself apart in all aspects of support and development. Plus, training is of the highest level, as it has just been accredited by the Institute of Travel & Tourism (ITT).

Let us guide you through some of the reasons to consider making the move.

Volume and value of training

Training should be at the forefront of your growth as a business owner, no matter how much experience you already have. Each new Travel Counsellor will be given a 10-day intensive induction (via Teams) to kick off their journey, which is tailored to their level of industry knowledge.

From getting to grips with the Phenix booking platform, to creating dummy quotes and learning how to manage your customer base, there will be plenty of advice from Travel Counsellors’ expert training team.

Always learning

Post-induction, the learning journey continues with a six-month ‘in flight’ onboarding programme.

With the Travel Counsellors business model, you have the freedom to work on the training independently as you grow your business.

It allows you to expand your product and destination knowledge, while meeting regularly with your dedicated Relationship Manager. They will work with you to make sure you’re achieving your business goals.

The end of the training will be marked with a celebratory ‘touchdown’ day at Travel Counsellor’s Venus Support Hub in Manchester. Think of it as graduating as a fully-fledged, trusted travel business owner.

Staying on top – from fam trips to stargazing

As a franchisee with Travel Counsellors you will have access to hundreds of online training courses through Discover, the online learning platform. So if there’s a gap in your knowledge or you’re looking to move to a new specialism such as cruise or touring and adventure, help is on hand.

There are plenty of opportunities throughout the year, especially around Peaks, to meet suppliers face-to-face at ‘Takeover Days’ and attend bespoke events such as sushi-making classes and stargazing evenings!

Anyone who works in travel knows the best way to sell a product is to experience it and Travel Counsellors works to secure exclusive fam trips for business owners to travel around the world.

Developing your business

Travel Counsellors are given access to Relationship Managers who will look at all aspects of developing and securing your business, from helping you to protect against cyber-crime and fraudulent activity through to personalised coaching sessions.

Each year, you will work with them to go through your business plan, setting realistic goals and developing a roadmap for achieving your objectives.

What Travel Counsellors say…

Sarah Mott (left) joined Travel Counsellors in January 2024 having previously worked in education.

She said: “I did explore other franchises before signing with Travel Counsellors. Some of the ones I investigated felt more like an MLM (Multi-level Marketing business) than a true travel agency, so I discounted them quickly. I also felt with some other franchises, you would be very much on your own. I know that I need support, especially in these early days – so Travel Counsellors won on that front.”

Emma Whiteman (right) has been in the industry for 20 years, joining Travel Counsellors four years ago.

Emma explained: “You can’t become a travel agent overnight. It’s a complex industry and things don’t always go smoothly – natural disasters, cancelled flights, and pandemics are just a few of the things you have to navigate. It takes someone with experience (or who has the backing of a trusted, reputable company), to know how to deal with these kinds of issues when they arise. I look after people’s holidays as if they were my own trips.”
