The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) has issued an update for Sri Lanka, after the US told citizens to avoid an east coast beach destination that is popular among surfers and other visitors.

The US Embassy in Colombo said on Tuesday it had ‘credible information’ of an attack threat targeting the ‘popular tourist locations in the Arugam Bay area’.

It said: “Due to the serious risk posed by this threat, the Embassy imposed a travel restriction on Embassy personnel for Arugam Bay effective immediately and until further notice.

“US citizens are strongly urged to avoid the Arugam Bay area until further notice.”

It added US citizens should report suspicious activity to local authorities, keep a mobile phone or other form of communication close and monitor local media for updates.

The Times Sri Lanka reports security has been stepped up in Arugam Bay and surrounding areas.

It said Deputy Inspector General of Police and Police Spokesman Nihal Thalduwa told media security was stepped up following information that there could be a threat to the Israeli nationals in the area. He said there is no threat to other areas in the country.

The FCDO has updated its Sri Lanka travel advice to say the US told citizens to avoid Arugam Bay, but is not currently telling British travellers to avoid the area.

The FCDO advice says: “At 0900hrs on 23 October, the US Embassy in Colombo issued a security alert.

“US citizens are strongly urged to avoid the Arugam Bay area until further notice.

“Be aware of your surroundings at all times, and follow our guidance on safety and security.”
