We are just weeks away from the launch of the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), which will see the digitisation of Europe’s borders and will begin to go live from 12 October 2025.
The introduction will be a phased approach, with the system rolling out over a period of six months, starting very gradually to begin with.
We have been working closely with the EU, UK Government, destinations and ports to understand the implications for you and your customers.
We’re pleased to be able to share that insight at a video conference call next week, Tuesday 9th September (11am-12pm), where we will also be joined by representatives from the UK Government’s Cabinet Office. If you’ve not already signed up, we recommend you register, you can do so here.
There is also a new resource in the Member Zone to help you explain to customers what EES is and how, due to the gradual introduction, they might not notice immediate changes but should still be aware that the system is being introduced.
Encouragingly, people are increasingly aware of EES, 51% of people told an ABTA survey they know about EES, rising to 61% of those who had travelled abroad over the last 12 months.
As I said in our press release, out today, the six-month implementation does present a communications challenge for the industry – it’s hard to prepare passengers for a system that they may or may not experience particularly as, due to security reasons, we’re unlikely to know which borders go live from day one.
Fortunately, there isn’t anything you need to do in advance for EES, as it is all done on arrival at the border. So, our message to people travelling from October is to take the time now to understand the changes in advance, and we’re preparing our members to help you.
Information for members about EES can be found in the Member Zone.
Information for customers is available from our website – www.abta.com/eesandetias
