Those of us at the ABTA Travel Convention these past few days have had an enlightening and enjoyable time courtesy of the Government of the Balearic Islands and Calvia Town Hall. This has been the sixth time we’ve hosted the Convention in Mallorca as we mark our 75th year supporting the industry.
Following a busy summer, this week has been a chance to take a breath and spend some time getting together to network and build business relationships and friendships. And, importantly, it has allowed us to really explore this year’s Convention theme – ‘The Road Ahead – Reasons to be Cheerful’.
We have recognised that we’re living in a time of economic, social, technological and political change. The UK economy needs to grow, and we believe that travel can be an important part of that growth story. The success of the international tourism industry brings its own challenges and we need to evolve a model for tourism that embraces all the stakeholders – those who live in the destinations we visit, those who work in tourism and those of us who are visitors.
That’s why we’ll be collaborating with Turespaña to help make tourism even better for everyone, collecting data to show progress towards a sustainable future and sharing best practice.
Meanwhile there are good reasons to be cheerful: demand for holidays and confidence to travel remain high; the government is aware of the importance of international travel, economically and socially; dialogue with Europe to smooth and improve customers’ experience is starting to bear fruit.
ABTA is here to guide our members through these disruptive times, during which opportunities can often arise and new businesses can emerge. We are part of a thriving industry, travel is still a staple in most people’s lives and we’re looking ahead with positivity and excitement.
