Representing travel in times of political change

It has been an eventful start to the political year with the resignation of the Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner, resulting in a reshuffle of government ministers over the last week.
For travel, there are several important changes, perhaps the most high-profile being the appointment of former Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper as Foreign Secretary. We also welcome a new Aviation Minister in Keir Mather, and a new Tourism Minister, with the appointment of Steph Peacock.
ABTA had developed strong working relationships with each of their predecessors and we will be looking to work with their successors in a similarly constructive manner. We have already been in touch to welcome the new ministers to their roles and to share the industry’s current policy priorities.
Over the next few weeks our Public Affairs team will be out and about representing members at annual party conferences, including the Labour Party conference at the end of the month.
These events offer an opportunity to engage with policymakers away from Westminster, to build on our relationships, and to take the political temperature in preparation for the busy pre-Christmas period. They are part of how we reinforce to the political world the value of our sector, as we do through our public affairs activity throughout the year.
