Following last week’s General Election, we’ve been straight to work in engaging with new Government ministers and MPs, building on the connections we made in advance of and during the election campaign.

I have written to members of the Cabinet, including the Chancellor, Business Secretary, and Secretary of State for Transport, as well as those ministers with direct responsibilities for our sector, such as the Aviation Minister, highlighting the value of the outbound travel industry to the UK economy.

In my correspondence I have stressed the need for the Government to work in partnership with the industry to deliver a sustainable and successful future, and raised the policy areas that are a priority for our members including ensuring there is a domestic industry in sustainable aviation fuels, enhancing UK-EU relations, and ensuring travel and tourism maintains a prominent place in education system.

As well as a change in Government, the election also saw a record number of new MPs entering Parliament, across all political parties, changing the Parliamentary landscape. As part of our lobbying activities over the coming months we will be working to develop relationships right across Parliament, regardless of Party affiliation, recognising the important role MPs play in scrutinising the executive, filling Select Committee posts, and representing businesses across the country.

We have a programme of activity planned for the rest of the year to make sure that the outbound travel industry’s views are heard and understood by Government and Parliament. This includes working with colleagues across the wider travel industry on shared priorities. An important part of that effort is the Future Travel Coalition and we look forward to meeting with colleagues from that group next week at ABTA’s office to agree on priorities, and shared activities, for the period ahead.
