I was very pleased this week to see that people seem to have growing confidence to travel overseas, and I’ve no doubt that this will in large part be because of ABTA members’ excellent work.

Our third annual Travel Confidence Index shows that the public is more confident than last year, with the index – effectively a net promoter score of consumer attitudes – standing at +53, up from +47 a year ago.

The index is just one part of our annual Holiday Habits research report, which is a thorough analysis of how people travelled in the previous 12 months and what their plans are for the next 12 months. The full report will be released during our Travel Convention next week.

In the meantime, the detailed index scores, when broken down into particular groups, are both heartening and fascinating in equal measure.

For example, how people booked and travelled significantly affects how confident they feel, with those who booked with a travel professional remaining very confident at +78 (up six points from +72 last year) and those who took a package holiday in the past year returning an even higher score of +80 (up six points from +74).

The Travel Confidence Index findings help our understanding of consumer sentiment beyond these headline figures, though. We also ask people which aspects of planning, booking or going on holiday give them the most confidence to travel. All the details are in our full summary, which can be seen here but something which stands out is that booking with an ABTA member continues to be rated essential or important by 75% of people to give them confidence to travel.

That’s down to you and other ABTA members always striving to ensure your customers are well advised, informed and prepared to have a fantastic holiday. Thank you for helping the UK ‘travel with confidence’.
