The majority of passengers travelling from five of the UK’s biggest airports were ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with the security screening last year, according to a survey by the Civil Aviation Authority.

It was the first time the CAA had quizzed passengers on their experience of airport security since before the pandemic.

Some 87% of the 14,000 passengers surveyed at Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted and Manchester had no complaints. Some 5% complained of queues, but only 2% complained about restrictions on liquids.

The survey was carried out before the introduction at some UK airports of new 3D scanners, which allow passengers to leave liquids in their bags when they pass through security.

Just over half (52%) of passengers surveyed spent no more than five minutes queuing and only 11% were held up for 15 minutes or more. The findings were broadly similar to 2019, the last time the survey was carried out, but there was a slight fall in the percentage of passengers who agreed any inconvenience caused was acceptable, down from 92% to 89%.

Passengers at Heathrow had the highest levels of satisfaction, with 89% ‘satisfied or very satisfied’ with their security screening experience, while Manchester had the highest proportion of ‘dissatisfied or very dissatisfied’ passengers (5%), in particular amongst those travelling from Terminal 3 (7%).
