Terror threat issued to Air India passengers

A terrorist has warned passengers not to fly on Air India between 1-19 November, Indian media is reporting.

The warning has come from Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, founder of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), who warned an attack could take place on a flight during the dates, which coincide with the 40th anniversary of anti-Sikh riots.

Pannun, who holds dual citizenship in Canada and the US, has been designated a terrorist by the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs since July 2020.

He issued a similar threat around the same time last year, India Today reports.

His latest threat follows bomb threats that have been made to several airlines in India in recent days, all of which have turned out to be hoaxes.

The Independent reports 100 flights have been disrupted over the past week, with most threats being made on X.

“At least 30 of the threats were received on Saturday alone and another dozen the next day. All turned out to be hoaxes,” The Independent said.

It said one Vistara Airlines aircraft was forced to return to Delhi on Sunday after Afghanistan denied it permission to fly through on its way to Frankfurt, due to a bomb threat. On Saturday, three Vistara flights received threats, forcing a Delhi to London flight to be diverted to Frankfurt. The other two landed safely at their destinations in Paris and Hong Kong.

IndiGo and Akasa Air flights have also been affected, and an Air India flight from Delhi to Chicago was diverted to the remote Iqaluit airport in Canada after the airline received a threat on Tuesday.

The Independent said Indian police and security agencies have launched investigations into the hoax threats, ‘but made little headway’.

India’s Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu said: “Such activities are a matter of grave concern. We will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of passengers and the smooth functioning of the aviation sector.”
